The spotlight will shine upon some of the region’s brightest music stars at the inaugural Arklatex Music Awards.

The red carpeted event will be 5:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at Central ArtStation in downtown Shreveport. The organizers will recognize musicians, radio stations, magazines and venues in the region for their talents and achievements.

“What makes [the Arklatex] unique is the people,” said organizer/promoter Nathan Hunnicutt. “You have individuals, bands, people with solid talents in the Arklatex who aren’t anywhere else. When people say there’s nothing in the music scene, it comes down to the public not knowing where to look for real, live music from musicians who are professionals and make at least a partial living on live music.”

Music performances will be sprinkled in between the distribution of awards. Nominees Beaux Atkins, Zebb Rogers, Nick Reese, Amanda Pruitt, Big Rome, Heather Harper and Billie Jo Sewell are scheduled to perform.

More than 100 nominees are in the running for the top titles. Genres on the ballot include Americana, blues, country, gospel, hip-hop, metal and rock.

The nominees were selected by online public vote, which closed July 21. The nominees represent the music scenes in parts of Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, as well as Oklahoma. The five nominees with the most votes moved forward as finalists.

The Hunnicutt Group NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and ABC’s “American Idol”  producing crowd-voted talent searches, sending contestants to audition for the shows’ producers.

In early 2018, its Acapella Music Awards will debut in Nashville, Tennessee.

But for this year, the group decided to extend their reach and support of grassroots talents and debut the Arklatex Music Awards. The ceremony is to further celebrate the diverse talents in the region, Hunnicutt said.

“The mission of what we’re doing is to expose the public to local talent and show them that the local talent is as good as what you’d find anywhere else,” Hunnicut said, who’s also a musician and singer. “It narrows down to passion. We dig music.”

The emcees for the evening will be DJ Jay Whatley (K94.5) and Chrissi Coile (former reporter for KTBS).

Attendees will have the photo opportunities with the music artists. Light refreshments will be available.

“The plan is for this to be the first of many, many years,” Hunnicutt said.
