Looking ahead to music’s biggest night, Billboard‘s Kevan Kenney, Vibe‘s Shenequa Golding and Mikey Fresh, and veteran music journalist John Norris discuss who could grab a coveted Best New Artist nomination at the 2018 Grammys.
Best New Artist has been a controversial category, mainly because of the definition of the word “new.” The Recording Academy defines this award as: “A new artist is defined as any performing artist who releases, during the eligibility year, the recording that first establishes the public identity of that artist as a performer.” Which is why last year’s winner — Chance the Rapper — was eligible for the award, despite having released several high-profile mixtapes before last year’s Coloring Book album.
With that in mind, these music experts are predicting that SZA will definitely be recognized for her critically acclaimed CTRL and chart-climbing lead single “Love Galore,” while recent Hot 100 sensation Cardi B could be left in the dust.
Other artists they’re hoping will make the cut include Julia Michaels, Logic, and Khalid. Watch the complete discussion above.
